M60-64: Theo Wirth runs away with it at 7:10 pace

• Theo Wirth (61, Roseville) won the M60-64 group in 1:33:52 — more than 11 minutes clear of the field, averaging 7:10/mi across all 13.1 miles.
• Ted Calvert edged Ben Hernandez for 2nd: 1:45:25 to 1:45:47 — just 22 seconds separated them after more than 105 minutes of racing.
• The 3rd–5th spots were decided by a mere 80 seconds: Robert Cathey (1:46:10), Jeff Boutte (1:47:30), and Jaybal Nadar (1:47:33) finishing within striking distance of each other.
• A deep, competitive field: 54 men finished in M60-64, with 20 breaking the 2:08 mark.

Theo Wirth didn't just win the M60-64 group — he dominated it. His 1:33:52 at 7:10 per mile was a performance in a different gear from everyone else on the course. His moves tell the story: he entered the men's field around 173rd and steadily climbed to 126th by the back half, a sustained forward march that never relented. On a clear, cool Sacramento morning — 55°F with a light 10 mph breeze — conditions were about as good as they get for a fast half marathon, and Wirth made the most of them.

Behind him, the real drama was the battle for 2nd. Ted Calvert (63, Sacramento) and Ben Hernandez (60, Sacramento) ran nearly identical races — 8:03 and 8:04 per mile respectively — with Calvert holding on by 22 seconds. Both men were moving through the men's field in similar fashion through the early checkpoints, but Calvert's slightly stronger second half proved to be the difference.

Further back, Robert Cathey put together one of the stronger closing segments in the group. Starting the race well down the men's field at 600th, he climbed all the way to 405th by the finish — and his Mile 11-to-finish split ranked 272nd in the men's field on that stretch, a genuine late-race surge that helped him claim 4th at 1:46:10. Jeff Boutte and Jaybal Nadar were right on his heels, separated by just three seconds at 1:47:30 and 1:47:33.
