Kevin Pool of Napa was the story of the closing miles, climbing from 20th to 14th among men on the back half and running the 12th-fastest 7M→Finish split in the field — sharper than anyone else in the top three on that stretch. But catching Arriola was a different task: Pool finished in 1:11:39, 23 seconds adrift, a gap that reflects how well Arriola managed his effort through the first half of the race.

Fernando Cabada, 43, out of Aurora, CO, was a class above the rest of the field, finishing 3rd in 1:14:21. The gap from 3rd to 4th tells its own story: Robert Nation crossed in 1:17:50 and John Ferguson in 1:18:13, meaning the top three were running in a different gear from everyone behind them. Nation and Ferguson were separated by just 23 seconds themselves, with Ferguson edging ahead on the 7M→Finish leg — his 34th-fastest split on that segment was stronger than Nation's 40th.

Deeper in the top 20, the field compressed quickly. Scott LaCrosse of El Dorado, at 62 years old, ran 1:23:17 to finish 10th — the same displayed time as 11th-place Marcos Gomez, though the places confirm LaCrosse edged him out. Kevin O'Neill, 56, of San Francisco, was 13th in 1:23:43, and Crispin Lazarit, 51, of Oakland, cracked the top ten in 1:23:10. Three athletes north of 50 in the top 14 is a reminder that Masters racing at Santa Rosa is no formality — 375 more finishers spread out behind them.
