Miles Pay, 14 years old out of Berkeley, was the only finisher in the 19 & Under field — and she made the most of it, crossing the line in 2:03:34 to claim the win by default of competition, but her performance tells a bigger story than that.

The early miles were where Pay made her mark. On the 1.2M–4.9M stretch, she posted the 2nd-fastest women's split in the entire field — not just among her peers, but among every woman who ran the race. She came through the first checkpoint holding 1st among women, and while the field eventually caught and passed her as the miles stacked up — she settled into 4th among women by the finish — that early surge was the real headline. Running a 9:26/mi average over 13.1 miles at age 14 is a serious effort, full stop.

With no one to race in the 19 & Under field, Pay raced the whole field instead. And for a stretch, she was leading it.
