SF Half Marathon F25-29: Katie Chu surges through the city to claim the title

• Katie Chu wins in 1:23:06 (6:20/mi), climbing from 11th to 5th among women across the race and posting the 6th-fastest women's split on the 4.9M–11.9M stretch.
• Closest battle at the top: Chu held off Clara Lin by just 12 seconds, with Kayla Lim another 31 seconds back in 3rd at 1:23:49 — three women inside 44 seconds across a 460-runner field.
• Lim's mid-race surge: The Los Angeles runner posted the 5th-fastest women's split on the 4.9M–11.9M segment, moving from 13th to 8th among women on that stretch — the strongest mid-race climb of anyone on the podium.
• Callie Zeifang and Jo Lees finished 14th and 15th in 1:41:16 apiece — different places decided by timing finer than the displayed second.

Katie Chu came to San Francisco's hills and turned them into her launching pad. Starting 11th among women, she was still 9th at the first checkpoint — but the middle miles told a different story. Her 6th-fastest women's split on the 4.9M–11.9M segment carried her to 6th among women, and she kept pressing all the way to 5th at the line. The 6:20/mi average that produced a 1:23:06 finish was the standard everyone else was chasing.

Clara Lin ran a remarkably similar race in structure — moving from 5th to 7th early before recovering to 4th and ultimately 6th among women — and her 7th-fastest women's split on that same middle segment kept her right in contention. She finished 2nd in 1:23:18, just 12 seconds adrift. Kayla Lim's story was arguably the most dramatic of the three: she sat 13th among women through the first two checkpoints before her 5th-fastest women's mid-race split launched her into 8th, where she held on for 3rd in 1:23:49.

Fourth-place Alexandra Beitia (1:25:26, 6:31/mi) deserves a mention for her late push — she posted the 7th-fastest women's split on the 11.9M–Finish segment, closing strongly to hold 11th among women at the line. Nicole Mackey rounded out the top five in 1:29:31, having climbed steadily from 30th among women at the first checkpoint all the way to 18th by the finish, with the 18th-fastest women's mid-race split fueling her rise.
