San Francisco Marathon M60-64: Soto Aguilar edges out a thriller at the front

• Hong Cao (San Francisco) ran 3:22:39 to claim 2nd — a finishing gap that belies a dramatic mid-race chase, as Cao surged steadily through the men's field in the second half while Soto Aguilar faded from an early aggressive position.
• Akira Kogawa (Irvine, CA) rounded out the podium in 3:30:48 (8:02/mi), finishing 8 minutes and 9 seconds behind the winner.
• A field of 98 finishers in M60-64 spread across a wide range, from the 3:22 front-runners to a long tail beyond 4:11 for 20th place Koichi Kobayashi.

Jose Macario Soto Aguilar came out swinging. His moves data tells the story of a man who went early and hard — sitting among the faster men at the gun and pushing through the opening miles at a 7:43/mi clip across San Francisco's famously rolling terrain. That bold front-running strategy paid off with the win, but it wasn't without cost: Soto Aguilar drifted steadily back through the men's field as the miles accumulated, a sign the pace was as aggressive as it looks on paper.

Meanwhile, Hong Cao was running an entirely different race. Starting well back, Cao reeled in competitor after competitor from mile 1 through the finish, trimming his men's field position from deep in the pack all the way up to 325th among men by the end — a sustained, disciplined build that nearly caught Soto Aguilar. The 29-second margin at the line was the product of two very different strategies converging: Soto Aguilar holding on, Cao hunting him down. What looked like a comfortable gap at halfway was anything but by the final miles.

Akira Kogawa (3:30:48) ran a measured 8:02/mi to secure 3rd, while Louis Brassard of Sherbrooke, QC crossed 4th in 3:40:33 and Cliff Richards of Maple Valley, WA finished 5th in 3:44:24 — the latter posting one of the stronger closing segments of the top five with the 467th-fastest split in the field from mile 24.69 to the finish. Behind the top five, a tight cluster formed between 6th and 8th: Jean-Luc Rauline (3:49:51), Igor Ermilov (3:49:59), and Mark Edmonds (3:50:06) were separated by just 15 seconds across three finishers — a battle of its own playing out in the fog and cool 56°F air along the bay.
