Matthew Walker was never going to let San Francisco's hills slow him down. The 24-year-old from Westerly, RI opened conservatively — sitting 9th among men through the early miles — but was already moving by the time the course hit the 6.52M–10.89M stretch, where he posted the 4th-fastest split of any runner in the entire women's and men's field on that segment. By the time the race entered its final miles, Walker had climbed to 3rd among all men, and his 5:49/mi average was a full 25 seconds per mile faster than anyone else in the M20-29 field. That's not a close race — that's a statement.

Behind Walker, the real drama played out over the remaining four spots on the podium. Andrew LePage (2nd, 2:43:19) and Ian Tibbals (3rd, 2:44:33) ran within 1:14 of each other, both posting strong late-race splits — LePage with the 11th-fastest men's split on the 14.95M–18M segment, Tibbals with the 18th-fastest on the 18M–24.69M stretch. Benjamin Beaudry (4th, 2:45:22) and Lorenzo Magni (5th, 2:46:00) were the field's most compelling movers, both starting in the 30s among men and steadily working their way into the top five across the back half of the course.

Saqib Rawda (6th, 2:46:33), Ryan Duncan (7th, 2:48:16), and Sam Levy (8th, 2:48:52) completed a strong top-eight separated by a total of under six minutes from 2nd through 8th. Langston Hazen (9th, 2:49:20) and Benjamin Leach (10th, 2:53:58) closed out the top ten. The gap from 10th to 20th — Leach's 2:53:58 to Jacob Lebovitz's 3:06:09 — tells you just how compressed the front of this 496-man field truly was.
