Carlos Larios, at 49, put on a clinic in San Francisco's cool, damp morning air — 57°F and 91% humidity providing as close to ideal racing conditions as the city offers. His 5:50/mi average was in a different class entirely from the rest of M45-49, and his margin over runner-up Gregory Guinney of Berkeley was a commanding 11 minutes and 14 seconds. Larios didn't just win; he was still climbing through the men's field in the final miles, a sign of even-to-negative pacing when most around him were fading.

Guinney (45, 1:27:37, 6:41/mi) ran a solid race for 2nd but drifted slightly through the men's standings as the race wore on, sliding from 45th to 50th among men by the finish. The most dramatic arc in M45-49 belonged to Travis Langemeier of Lincoln, NE. Sitting 247th among men at the 2.95-mile mark, he ran himself into a completely different race over the back half, finishing 107th among men and 5th in M45-49 at 1:36:01. His 59th-fastest closing segment split among the men was the engine of that charge. David Gonzales (6th, 1:36:55) and Sameer Khurana (7th, 1:39:08) filled out the top seven, with the remaining 95 finishers spread across a wide range down to the back of a 102-strong field.
