The real drama unfolded behind him, where Andrew Cheng, 19, of San Francisco, and Lleyton Chan, 17, of Agua Dulce, ran a tense race for the silver spot. Cheng held the edge through much of the course and finished 2nd in 1:16:37 at 5:51/mi. But Chan came on strong in the closing miles — his 10th-fastest split on the 10.9M-to-Finish segment among the broader field was faster than Cheng's 15th-fastest on the 5M-to-10.9M stretch — and he closed to within 12 seconds, finishing 3rd in 1:16:49 at 5:52/mi. That final segment was a genuine catch-up: Chan ran it harder, Cheng held on by the skin of his teeth.

Jack Brady and Agustin Gomez De La Vega, both 18 and 19 respectively, ran nearly identical races for 4th and 5th — Brady in 1:20:23 and Gomez De La Vega in 1:20:29, just six seconds apart, both averaging 6:08/mi.
