SF Marathon Half: Gudmundsdottir dominates the F55-59 field

• Hrönn Gudmundsdottir won the F55-59 race in 1:43:12 (7:52/mi) — more than 14 minutes clear of second place.
• Tracy Della Valle (2nd, 1:57:40) and Jana Mckee (3rd, 2:00:03) were separated by just 2:23 at the finish.
• Joanne Babin (4th, 2:03:37) and Monica Broerman (5th, 2:04:05) fought all the way to the line, finishing 28 seconds apart.
• The F55-59 field stretched across a wide range of efforts: from Gudmundsdottir's 7:52/mi to Line Jacques' 20th-place 2:50:10 (12:59/mi).

Hrönn Gudmundsdottir, 57, from San Carlos, made the F55-59 race her own from the start. She entered the second half of the course already sitting 49th among all women, and kept climbing — finishing 47th among the women's field at 1:43:12. Her 7:52/mi average was a cut above anyone else in this group, and she posted the 43rd-fastest women's split on the second half of the course, meaning she didn't just build a lead — she held her pace where others faded. The gap to second place was 14 minutes and 28 seconds: a commanding, unambiguous victory.

Behind her, Tracy Della Valle of San Luis Obispo ran a composed 1:57:40 (8:59/mi) to claim second, while Santa Barbara's Jana Mckee crossed in 2:00:03 (9:09/mi) for third. Della Valle had moved steadily through the women's field in the early miles before fading slightly in the final stretch — her gender place slipped from 162nd to 182nd in the closing segment — but she had done enough. Mckee, meanwhile, was a mover on the 5M–10.9M stretch, posting the 199th-fastest women's split on that segment and holding firm to the finish.

The battle for fourth and fifth was the sharpest of the day. San Francisco local Joanne Babin (2:03:37, 9:26/mi) had surged powerfully through the middle miles — climbing from 346th to 239th among women between miles 5 and 10.9 — but Monica Broerman of San Mateo answered with the 188th-fastest women's split on the final stretch to the finish, trimming the gap to just 28 seconds. Broerman's late charge wasn't quite enough to overtake Babin, but it made for a compelling finish to the F55-59 story.
