M50-54: Capelli Dominates the Parkway in 2:06:17

Running at 6:19/mi on a warm November morning — 74°F with enough humidity to make every mile honest — the 53-year-old from El Dorado Hills held 2nd among men overall from the first checkpoint through the finish line, never wavering. His winning margin of ten minutes over runner-up David Kaffka wasn't a photo finish; it was a statement.

Kaffka's race told a different kind of story. The Citrus Heights runner was buried in 19th among men at the early checkpoints, but he found another gear between miles 10 and 15.6, posting the 12th-fastest men's split on that segment to claw his way up to 12th among men by the finish. His 6:49/mi average earned him a clear 2nd in M50-54 and left the rest of the field well behind. Pao Lex Moua (2:22:42, 7:08/mi) rounded out the podium in 3rd, though his trajectory ran the opposite direction — he gradually slipped through the men's field across the second half of the race.

The most nerve-wracking finish of the day in M50-54 had nothing to do with the podium. Mahesh Reghupathy of Pleasanton and Scott Mann of Rocklin ran 20 miles and crossed the line in 2:34:00 and 2:34:02 respectively — a two-second gap after more than two and a half hours of racing. Reghupathy had been the stronger closer, posting the 38th-fastest men's split on the Mile 16-to-finish segment to hold off Mann for 5th. Two seconds. Twenty miles.
