Rocket City Half Marathon M50-54: Graves Runs Away With It in the Cold

• Scott Graves (53, Mooresville NC) won the M50-54 group in 1:37:50 — a 7:28/mi average — finishing 48 seconds clear of runner-up Jody Cardwell.
• Cardwell (50, Knoxville TN) held 2nd in 1:38:38, while Matt Swoboda (52, Daphne AL) claimed the final podium spot in 1:44:05 — more than five minutes back.
• A tight cluster formed at 6th through 9th place, with Vicente Rivera, Brandon Keller, Antonio Munoz, and John McGuire all finishing within 53 seconds of each other (1:52:03 to 1:52:56).
• The second half separated the field: Graves and Cardwell both moved forward in the men's standings from 6.8M to the finish, while Philip Duffie (4th) slid five spots in the same stretch.

Twenty-nine degrees, clear skies, and a 16 mph wind greeted 51 finishers in the M50-54 group at Rocket City — conditions that reward those who start conservatively and build. Scott Graves did exactly that. Running a 7:28 average, he was already in control through the first half and kept gaining ground on the men around him over the final 6.8 miles, climbing six spots in the overall men's standings to close it out. At 53, he was the oldest man on the podium — and the fastest by a comfortable margin.

Jody Cardwell ran a nearly identical race shape, also moving forward in the men's field over the back half, finishing in 1:38:38. The 48-second gap between first and second is decisive but not a blowout — Cardwell was clearly in a different gear from the rest of the group. Swoboda's 1:44:05 for third was respectable, and he too gained 15 spots among men over the second half, suggesting a strong finish to his race.

The real story from fourth place onward was how quickly the pack compressed. Duffie ran 1:45:49 in fourth, and Brad Kropfelder followed in 1:49:25 — then six more runners stacked up between 1:52 and 1:54, turning positions 6 through 12 into a genuine race within a race. In those conditions, every second of that tight grouping was hard-earned.
