Rocket City Half Marathon — F70-74: Foresteire Dominates in the Deep Freeze

• Nancy Foresteire won the F70-74 group in 2:34:35 (11:48/mi), finishing more than 12 minutes clear of second place.
• Foresteire gained 47 spots among women in the second half (6.8M to finish), posting the 436th-fastest women's split on that segment — the strongest closing move in the group.
• Shepherd edged Strauss for 3rd by over 11 minutes, while Shepherd and Carter ran the two closest splits in the back half — the 613th and 614th-fastest women's splits on that segment, respectively.
• Five women finished the 13.1 miles in 29°F with 16 mph winds — no small feat at any age.

Nancy Foresteire, 72, from Rockledge, FL, made this race look like a controlled effort from start to finish. Her 11:48/mi average held up well enough to gain 47 places among women in the second half alone, moving from 535th to 488th in the women's field — the only F70-74 finisher to move meaningfully forward late in the race. That closing split, 436th-fastest among women on the 6.8M-to-finish segment, underscores just how composed her second half was relative to the rest of the group.

Behind her, Terri Carter (2:47:33) and Sonya Shepherd (2:53:55) separated themselves from the back of the field, though both gave back a little ground in the second half — Carter slipping from 576th to 595th among women, Shepherd recovering from 661st to 633rd. Their back-half splits were nearly identical: Shepherd posted the 613th-fastest women's split on that segment, Carter the 614th, making for the tightest sub-battle of the day within the group.

Lesley Strauss (3:05:38) and Vickie Valentine (3:38:27) rounded out the five, with Valentine's 16:40/mi pace reflecting just how punishing the cold and wind can be over 13 miles. All five women finishing on a 29°F morning with a 16 mph bite in the air is worth acknowledging on its own terms — the conditions demanded as much toughness as fitness.
