M21-24: Bjorn Thorsen closes strong to claim the title in Napa

• Zachary Blackwood runs the 2nd-fastest men's split from 6.2M to 13.1M in the field, finishing 2nd in 2:44:55 — just 36 seconds back.
• Michael Montez and Christian Goodson both charge from outside the top 25 men's field early on to claim 4th (2:50:40) and 5th (2:51:38), respectively, with top-15 men's splits in the final 10K.

Cold, wet, and blustery at 41°F with light rain — not a day for fast times — and the M21-24 field delivered a genuine tactical race across 45 finishers. Bjorn Thorsen didn't look like the winner early. He entered the second half 13th among men, then steadily picked off competitors, moving to 9th, then 7th, then 6th by the finish. His 6:16/mi average and the 5th-fastest men's second-half split in the field tell the story: Thorsen got stronger as the miles mounted.

Zachary Blackwood made his move in the middle stretch, running the 2nd-fastest men's split from 6.2M to 13.1M to climb as high as 3rd among men. He couldn't hold that position through the back half, sliding to 8th in the men's field, but his overall pace of 6:17/mi held well enough to lock up 2nd in M21-24 at 2:44:55. The 36-second gap to Thorsen reflects two runners who raced very differently — Blackwood's burst came mid-race, Thorsen's came late.

Third place tells a different story. Adnan Contractor (New York, NY, 23) was 5th among men through 6.2M and posted the 7th-fastest men's split on the next segment — but the second half undid him. He faded from 10th to 14th among men over the final miles, finishing in 2:48:31 at 6:26/mi. Behind him, Michael Montez (San Francisco, CA) and Christian Goodson (Honolulu, HI) were the day's biggest movers — both lurking outside the top 25 men early, both running top-15 men's splits in the closing miles to finish 4th (2:50:40) and 5th (2:51:38) and make the podium chase look easy in hindsight.
