Napa Valley Marathon F50-54: Ting Zhang Runs Down the Field

• Ting Zhang wins in 3:23:44 (7:46/mi), climbing from 64th to 37th among women across the race — the most aggressive upward move in the F50-54 field.
• Shelly Allen's strong opening fades late: she held 39th among women through the halfway mark before slipping to 63rd by the finish, handing the runner-up spot to Allen at 3:28:39 — nearly five minutes back of Zhang.
• Nicole Varnell and Victoria Daily finished 6th and 7th in a combined seven-second window — 3:59:34 and 3:59:41 — the tightest battle in the field.
• Aya Van Wagner rounded out the podium in 3:33:58 (8:10/mi), steady from start to finish, improving from 108th to 85th among women across the race.

Cold, wet, and windy at 41°F with light rain, the 2024 Napa Valley Marathon was no gift of a morning — but Ting Zhang, 51, from Coquitlam, BC, treated it like a runway. She started conservatively, sitting 64th among women at the first checkpoint, and spent the entire race passing people. By the halfway mark she'd moved to 45th, and she kept pressing — posting the 29th-fastest second-half women's split in the field — to cross in 3:23:44 and claim the F50-54 title by nearly five minutes.

Shelly Allen, 53, of Nevada City, ran the opposite race. She was locked in at 42nd among women through the first 6.2 miles and posted the 35th-fastest women's split on the 6.2-to-13.1-mile stretch — a genuinely strong middle segment. But the back half cost her: she slipped from 39th among women at the halfway point all the way to 63rd by the finish, eventually settling for 2nd in 3:28:39. Zhang was catching her; Allen was fading. The gap between them tells the story.

Aya Van Wagner, 53, of Fremont, was the model of consistency, moving steadily from 108th to 85th among women and finishing 3rd in 3:33:58. Heather Weirath, 51, of Gilbert, AZ, took 4th in 3:39:03 with the 71st-fastest women's split on the final stretch from mile 20 to the finish — a solid close. Wenli Bai, 54, rounded out the top five in 3:50:12, her best segment coming between miles 13.1 and 20.

The sub-4:00 barrier proved the day's great dividing line: Nicole Varnell (3:59:34) and Victoria Daily (3:59:41) both squeezed under it, separated by just seven seconds for 6th and 7th. Behind them, a cluster of 13 more finishers spread across the 4:00–4:34 range, with at least 23 additional women completing the F50-54 field on a tough Napa morning.
