Forty-one degrees, light rain, and 84% humidity — not exactly ideal marathon conditions — and Heidi Witter of Auburn, CA barely seemed to notice. She crossed in 3:58:35 at a 9:06/mi clip, the only woman in the F60-64 field to dip under four hours and a clear, commanding win. Her gender place drifted slightly through the middle miles (165th among women at 6.2M, sliding to 183rd by 20M), but the final time tells the real story: a full five minutes ahead of anyone else in her field.

Karyn Simmonds of San Diego ran a notably different kind of race. She was actually positioned higher among the women's field early — 143rd at the first checkpoint — before fading to 217th by 20M. But she steadied, posted the 203rd-fastest women's split on the closing 20M-to-Finish stretch, and held on for 2nd in 4:03:40 (9:18/mi). Phyllis Saavedra, racing on her home turf in Napa, worked the opposite trajectory: starting deep in the women's field (250th at 6.2M) and climbing steadily to finish 3rd in 4:08:33 (9:29/mi), including the 215th-fastest women's split on the 13.1M-to-20M segment.

The most entertaining subplot in the back half belonged to Jill Robey of Houston. She was 386th among women through 6.2M — far behind where she'd finish — and ground her way forward the entire race, posting the 168th-fastest women's closing split to land 5th in 4:12:41 (9:38/mi). Sheila Oneill of Sonoma finished 4th in 4:11:18, holding off Robey by just 87 seconds despite Robey's stronger finish. Behind them, Sue Alschuler (6th, 4:20:10), Nannette Samuelson (7th, 4:23:10), and Doreen Morales (8th, 4:24:17) rounded out a tight mid-pack cluster, all finishing within four minutes of each other.
