F55-59: Claflin edges Tuluie in a nine-second thriller

The F55-59 race came down to nine seconds after 26.2 miles in the cold Napa rain — and the story of how it got that close is worth telling. Elizabeth Claflin of Morrison, CO ran a strong early race, holding a women's-field place in the 69s through the first checkpoint before fading gradually to 105th among women by the finish. Her 8:24/mi pace held, but her position in the broader women's field tells you the course was catching up to her in the back half. Tuluie, meanwhile, was moving the other direction.

Tania Tuluie of Encinitas, CA was sitting 110th among women at the first checkpoint and barely moved through the middle of the race — 112th, then 115th — before turning on the jets. Her 91st-fastest women's split on the 20M-to-finish segment was a genuine surge, and she clawed from 115th all the way back to 106th among women in that final stretch. She was catching Claflin, but Claflin had just enough of a cushion. Nine seconds. That's what separated them after 3 hours and 40 minutes of racing.

Toril Asbjørnsen of Hundvaag made it interesting further back, posting the 154th-fastest women's split on the 20M→Finish segment and finishing a solid third in 4:01:27 at 9:13/mi. Rosemary Hallett (4th, 4:05:12) and Angela Arnold (5th, 4:07:24) both ran strong middle segments — each posting the 208th and 209th-fastest women's splits respectively on the 13.1M→20M leg — and finished within two minutes of each other. Soraya Azevedo rounded out the top six in 4:08:22, leaving a significant gap before Jennifer Cannon crossed in 7th at 4:35:54. At the back of the field, Kathi Braun completed her marathon in 5:43:04, earning every one of those 13:05/mi in the wet Napa morning.
