Alondra Gauthier came to Long Beach and did exactly what was required: she showed up, she ran, and she took the X55-59 title outright. With no one else in her field to push her, the 58-year-old from Simi Valley made her own race of it, covering the half marathon distance in 3:21:48 on a cool, clear October morning.

What keeps the story interesting is what happened in the middle miles. Between 5.5 and 10.8 miles, Gauthier found another gear, posting the 21st-fastest women's split on that segment across the entire women's field — a genuine surge that lifted her from 22nd to 21st among women and showed she wasn't simply cruising to the tape.
