Ayako Kawakami of Irvine ran a wire-to-wire statement. She sat 15th among all women through the early miles, climbed to 13th at mid-race, and cracked the top 11 by the finish — all while averaging 6:36 per mile across 13.1 miles on a cool, humid Long Beach morning. Her 10th-fastest women's split on the closing 10.8-mile segment sealed a victory that was never in doubt: the margin over runner-up Ostrosky was 2:12, the widest gap at the top of the Masters Women's podium.

Ostrosky was steady where Kawakami was relentless. The Altadena runner moved from 24th to 20th among women by mid-race and held that position all the way to the tape, averaging 6:46/mi for her 1:28:37. Her 11th-fastest women's closing split confirms she was racing hard to the end — just not hard enough to close the gap. Grace Padilla of Highland made the podium count at 54 years old, running 6:57/mi for a 1:31:12 that placed her 24th among all women at the line.

The real drama of the morning unfolded just outside the podium. Emily Carlin (4th, 1:34:23) and Hilary Pecis (5th, 1:34:27) both came charging through the back half — Carlin moved from 48th to 31st among women, Pecis from 58th to 32nd, each posting a top-25 women's closing split. Margo Kasting (6th, 1:34:30) rounded out a three-woman cluster that covered just seven seconds across more than 13 miles. In a field of 1,702 masters women, that's a battle worth savoring. Leslie Cohen of Santa Monica, 69, finished 15th in 1:40:05 — one of the more quietly remarkable results on the results sheet.
