Long Beach Half Marathon F35-39: Funston flies to a dominant win in a loaded field

• Renee Funston, 1:24:14 (6:26/mi) — wins F35-39 by 3:29 over Kristina Jacinth, finishing 8th among all women with the 8th-fastest women's split on the final stretch.
• Kristina Jacinth's surge: moved from 54th among women at 5.5M to 15th by the finish, posting the 5th-fastest women's split on the 5.5M–10.8M middle leg to lock up 2nd in 1:27:43.
• Corina Alvarez, 3rd in 1:28:28: ran the most consistent race of the podium, holding 19th among women from start to finish, closing with the 17th-fastest women's split on the final segment.
• Tight battle for 4th–6th: Jamie Heim (1:34:40), Jessica Penaflor (1:34:46), and Brooke Holden (1:35:02) were separated by just 22 seconds across the line.

Renee Funston made this one look straightforward from the front. The 35-year-old from Los Angeles was already 10th among all women at the first checkpoint, moved to 8th by mid-race, and held that position all the way to the tape — finishing in 1:24:14 at a 6:26/mi clip. Her margin of victory, 3 minutes and 29 seconds, was never really in doubt.

The most compelling story behind her was Kristina Jacinth's charge through the field. Sitting 54th among women at the 5.5-mile mark, the 38-year-old from Los Angeles unleashed the 5th-fastest women's split on the middle segment to vault all the way to 15th among women and 2nd in F35-39, crossing in 1:27:43 (6:41/mi). She made up enormous ground on Corina Alvarez, who had been running steadily in 19th among women the entire race — Alvarez's consistency earned her 3rd in 1:28:24 (6:45/mi), a close finish in time but a very different story in how it was run.

Fourth through sixth played out as a genuine race within the race. Jamie Heim (1:34:40) and Jessica Penaflor (1:34:46) were separated by just six seconds, with Penaflor actually posting the 45th-fastest women's middle split to Heim's 51st — Penaflor closed the gap but couldn't quite get past. Brooke Holden from Ojai finished just 16 seconds further back in 1:35:02 to round out the top six. Behind them, 996 women in total crossed the finish line in F35-39, making it one of the deepest fields on the course.
