M50-54 at Long Beach: Patterson dominates, Juma and Chia separated by a blink

Noah Patterson simply ran away from a strong M50-54 field. The 52-year-old from Santa Ana covered the course at 6:18/mi to finish in 1:22:35 — a margin of more than four minutes over his nearest challenger. His moves told the story of a man in control: he advanced steadily through the men's field as the race progressed, and his closing leg from 10.8 miles to the finish ranked among the fastest in the broader field on that segment.

Behind him, the battle for the podium was decided by the narrowest of margins. Lucius Juma of Newport Beach ran a strong second half, climbing from 161st to 119th in the men's field between the 5.5-mile and finish checkpoints at a 6:38/mi clip, to claim 2nd in 1:26:55. David Chia of Irvine crossed in 1:26:56 — one second back — to take 3rd. Crucially, it was Juma who made up time late: his closing split from 10.8 miles in was the faster of the two, while Chia had been the stronger runner through the middle segment. Juma caught up and edged ahead; Chia held on for 3rd by the slimmest margin the clock allows.

Charles Sipkins (Los Angeles, 4th, 1:29:07, 6:48/mi) rounded out the sub-1:30 group, himself advancing steadily through the men's field in the second half. Andrew Lapin of San Clemente was 5th in 1:31:32, followed by Long Beach's own Christopher Errecart in 6th at 1:32:21. The rest of the top ten — Greg Sambrano (7th, 1:33:24), Benito Ramirez (8th, 1:34:30), Jason Baldwin (9th, 1:35:09), and Alfredo Trujillo (10th, 1:36:22) — formed a competitive chase pack, all finishing within about 14 minutes of the winner across a 342-man field.
