Jed Smith Ultra Classic Half Marathon: Cooper Commands the M40-49 Field

Jacob Cooper made his intentions clear from the gun. Sitting 7th among men at the first checkpoint, he had already distanced himself from the M40-49 field and never looked back, crossing in 1:39:47 at a 7:37-per-mile clip. That pace — steady, controlled, and punishing in Sacramento's thick morning fog — was enough to win the age group by nearly three minutes and hold 6th among men at the finish.

The battle for the podium told its own story. Glen Lally (1:42:37) was the race's great mover, surging from 13th among men early on all the way to 7th by the finish. Greg Anderson, the youngest man on the podium at 40, ran a composed 1:44:34 to take 3rd. Anthony Lipscomb and Branton Boehm were inseparable through much of the race — separated by just 44 seconds at the line — rounding out a top five that all finished within 8:14 per mile.

Beyond 5th place, the gaps widened considerably. Stephen Smith (1:51:45) held 6th comfortably, while Joaquin Castaneda, Trung Hoang, and John Deterding formed a loose mid-pack cluster between 1:57 and 2:05. Then came the race's most dramatic moment at the very back: Lynnard and Edward Cabanas — sharing a surname and, apparently, a finishing kick — hit the line in an identical 2:27:16. The timing system needed fractions of a second to separate them, with Lynnard's 2:27:16.39 just edging Edward's 2:27:16.77. A sprint finish decided by less than half a heartbeat.
