Jed Smith Half Marathon F50-59: Bustillos Claims the Age Group in the Fog

• Claudia Bustillos, 53, wins the F50-59 age group in 2:14:12 (10:15/mi), finishing 2 minutes 8 seconds ahead of runner-up Michelle Carrasco.
• Tightest battle of the day: Jennifer Ras (2:27:49) and Claudia Wirth (2:28:16) were separated by just 27 seconds for 3rd and 4th — the closest gap in the group.
• Strongest closer: Both Carrasco and Ras posted the 17th- and 18th-fastest women's splits on the Lap 1→Finish segment, each gaining ground in the women's field on the back half.
• Jennifer Ras made the biggest move, climbing from 31st to 23rd among women across the race.

Claudia Bustillos set the tone early and held it. Running a steady 10:15-per-mile pace through Sacramento's dense fog, she posted the 17th-fastest women's split on the Out & Back into Lap 1 and never relinquished her lead in the F50-59 group. Her 2:14:12 was the class of the field by a clear margin.

Michelle Carrasco, 56, from Elk Grove, was the most composed runner in the group over the second half — she actually gained a position among women between the midpoint and the finish, ending 20th in the women's field. Her 2:16:20 secured second place comfortably, though Bustillos was never truly in her sights.

The race for the final podium spot was a genuine contest. Jennifer Ras came on strong late, posting the 18th-fastest women's Lap 1→Finish split in the entire women's field and climbing eight places among women over the course of the race. It wasn't quite enough to catch Wirth's early positioning — Wirth had posted the 24th-fastest women's split on the Out & Back→Lap 1 segment — but Ras closed the 27-second gap to nearly nothing. Neli Palma, also 55, ran a consistent 11:39/mi to round out the top five.

Joy Stringer and Natalie Uyeno completed the seven-woman group, with Uyeno finishing in 3:46:16 — a notably different race experience on the same foggy Sacramento course.
