Gonzalez and leaving the rest of a 540-woman field to chase her shadow through the Fresno streets on a warm, clear November morning.

What makes this result extraordinary is who was doing the chasing. M. Gonzalez, just 12 years old, crossed in 20:37 (6:38/mi) to claim second, and fellow 12-year-old L. Stillmaker of Clovis finished third in 20:54 (6:44/mi). Alice Matsutsubo, 13, was fourth in 21:06, and 12-year-old I. Roman rounded out the top five in 21:26. The first adult woman across the line was Caliska Avila, 22, who finished seventh in 21:44 — nearly two full minutes behind the winner.

The depth of the field told its own story further back. Stephanie Kelley, 43, delivered the most impressive adult performance of the day, finishing 10th in 23:14 at a 7:29/mi clip, ahead of a 17-year-old and the rest of a field that stretched 520 finishers deep beyond the top 20. Jacqueline Schiemer, 41 and from Clovis, wasn't far behind at 12th in 23:54. The back half of the top 20 tightened considerably — Kelly Kirk (18th, 26:00) and Yokie Curiel (19th, 26:05) were separated by just five seconds — before Faith Vargas, 13, closed out the listed finishers in 20th with a 26:18.
