Men's 5K: Friesen Flies Home in Santa Rosa

• Vincent Friesen (Santa Rosa, CA) took the men's title in 16:09 — a 5:12/mi clip that no one in a 386-man field could match.

Vincent Friesen had home-course advantage and made it count. The 26-year-old Santa Rosa native crossed in 16:09 at a 5:12/mi average, setting the pace that defined the entire men's race. Petaluma's Anthony Cortes was the only man who came close, running 5:15/mi to finish 2nd in 16:18 — those 9 seconds represent a genuine contest at the front, but Friesen had enough to hold him off cleanly.

The gap to 3rd tells a different story. Cleo McClain of Saint Helena ran a composed 17:18 — solid for a 20-year-old, and more than a minute clear of 4th-place Max Kam (18:07, 5:50/mi). Kam, at 39, edged out 25-year-old Anthony Ybarra for 4th, with Ybarra finishing 5th in 18:40 at an even 6:00/mi. Behind them, Cristian Morales (6th, 19:24) and Reece Fenning (7th, 19:29) ran within five seconds of each other — the tightest battle on the day outside the top two.

The most eyebrow-raising performance deeper in the field came from 57-year-old Mark Selwyn of Palo Alto, who ran 20:16 at 6:31/mi to finish 9th among all men — ahead of 151 runners who didn't make the top-20 list and well inside the top 10 of a 386-man field. Sixteen-year-old Benjamin Bautista (14th, 21:13) and 19-year-old Jaydrek Andre Magsano (11th, 20:37) also made their presence felt at the front of the pack, rounding out a top 20 that spanned four decades of age.
