M50-59: Gibson Edges Tognarelli in a Sub-3:05 Showdown at Santa Rosa

Stan Gibson made the Santa Rosa Marathon's flat, fast Sonoma County course work in his favor from the gun. Running 6:56/mi, the 57-year-old from Palos Verdes Estates moved from 125th among men at the halfway point all the way to 85th by the finish — a relentless second-half charge that no one in the M50-59 field could match. His 3:01:54 stands as a comfortable margin over the rest of the podium, and it's the kind of time that punches well above the Boston Qualifier standard this race is known for.

Michael Tognarelli (52, San Francisco) gave chase and finished in 3:02:56 — just 62 seconds behind Gibson after 26.2 miles, running 6:59/mi and climbing from 119th to 91st among men in the back half. Pao Moua (51, Elk Grove) rounded out the podium in 3:05:38, holding a steady 7:05/mi to finish 3rd.

The race within the race was happening just behind them. James OBrien (53, San Francisco) crossed 4th in 3:06:58, but his second half told the real story: starting the 13.1M→Finish segment from 162nd among men, he ran himself all the way to 115th — the sharpest second-half climb in the top five, and the 98th-fastest back-half split in the men's field. David Mackay (52, Concord) was 5th in 3:08:42, with Ron Salvatori (50, Sacramento) and Brian Montgomery (54, Arnold) following in 3:11:32 and 3:12:03 respectively.

The depth across M50-59 was striking: Owen Brown, Hyojun Kim, and Enrique Gutierrez Wing — 9th, 10th, and 11th — all clocked 3:12:47, 3:12:48, and 3:12:53, three finishers packed into a six-second window. With 124 men completing the race and 11 of them under 3:13, this was one of the stronger M50-59 showings Santa Rosa has seen.
