F50-59 Marathon: Marks sets the pace in a deep field of 63

Miriam Marks, 50, from Huntington Beach, ran the most commanding race in the F50-59 field, averaging 7:59 per mile from start to finish. She moved from 73rd to 59th among women in the second half, posting the 60th-fastest women's split on the 13.1M-to-finish stretch — a strong close that underscored just how controlled and consistent her effort was. No one else in the field came close to threatening her lead.

Behind Marks, the real drama unfolded in the race for 2nd through 5th. Williams (3:42:14, 8:29/mi) and Flam (3:43:02, 8:30/mi) ran nearly the same second half — Williams posted the 82nd-fastest women's split on that stretch, Flam the 89th — but Williams held the edge to claim 2nd by 48 seconds. Then came one of the tightest battles of the day: Luu and Callahan crossed 4th and 5th in 3:45:02 and 3:45:10, just 8 seconds apart. Luu got there by surging through the field — gaining 40 spots among women in the second half — while Callahan, who had been running 95th among women at the halfway mark, faded just enough to let Luu slip past.

From 6th through 15th, the field stayed remarkably compact: Charrissa Lin (6th, 3:46:19) through Sandra Gutierrez (15th, 3:54:20) covered just over eight minutes of racing. Emmi Bishop, 59, claimed 7th in 3:48:03, and Alicia Juarez, also 59, finished 9th in 3:49:19 — a reminder that the back end of the F50-59 age range was well represented and competitive throughout.
