M40-49 Half Marathon: Lira leads a deep field to the tape

• Cesar Lira (Daly City, CA, age 42) won the M40-49 race in 1:16:57 (5:52/mi), finishing 39 seconds clear of runner-up John Ferguson.
• Marcos Gomez (Livermore, CA, age 41) ran the fastest closing split (7M→Finish) among the top three, posting the 28th-fastest split in that segment in the field — helping him hold 3rd at 1:19:51.
• The top two were separated by just 39 seconds; 3rd through 5th spanned another six minutes, with Cris Flores rounding out the top five in 1:22:59.
• A field of 170 finishers made this one of the day's most competitive age brackets, with 20 athletes breaking 1:33.

Cool, clear conditions at 52°F set the stage for fast racing in Santa Rosa, and Cesar Lira made the most of it. The 42-year-old from Daly City ran a composed 5:52/mi to claim the M40-49 title in 1:16:57 — a time that would turn heads in any masters field. New Yorker John Ferguson (age 43) pushed him the whole way, crossing in 1:17:36 at 5:55/mi, but Lira's lead was never seriously threatened over the final stretch.

Behind that front pair, Marcos Gomez of Livermore made a statement on the back half of the course. He came into the 7-mile mark in 3rd and stayed there, but his 7M→Finish split was the sharpest of the top three — the 28th-fastest closing split in the field — suggesting he was building momentum while others held steady. He finished in 1:19:51. Ismael Hernandez (Torrance, CA, age 45) was 4th in 1:21:02, while Cris Flores (Fresno, CA, age 45) rounded out the top five in 1:22:59, both demonstrating that the 45-year-old contingent in this group had plenty left to say.

The race didn't thin out after the podium, either. Greg Feyereisn (Aptos, CA) and Juan Sandoval (Burbank, CA, age 49) finished 6th and 7th in 1:25:11 and 1:25:17 respectively — just six seconds apart after 13.1 miles — with Sandoval's near-match of Feyereisn's time being one of the tightest gaps of the day. Luis Angulo (9th, 1:26:46) through Eric Heinze (20th, 1:32:34) kept the pack honest all the way down, a testament to the depth that 170 finishers in the M40-49 field can produce.
