M1-29: Grant Rogers Leads a Young Charge Through the Sacramento Fog

Grant Rogers set the tone early and never let up. Running 7:53 per mile through 50°F fog along the Sacramento course, the 18-year-old from Folsom steadily climbed the men's standings — from 12th at the opening checkpoint to 9th, then 8th at the finish — and won M1-29 with a margin of 2:30 over the runner-up. It was a composed, front-to-back performance.

What makes this group's story genuinely striking is the age of the podium. Leonid Huth and Toby Lipscomb are both 12 years old, and they ran a half marathon in 1:45:42 and 1:47:35 respectively — averaging 8:04 and 8:13 per mile. Huth held his position more steadily, while Lipscomb made the bigger move, climbing from 15th among men to 10th through the middle of the race before settling into 3rd.

Antonio Cormier's race told a different story. The 19-year-old from El Dorado Hills was 6th among men through the Out & Back — ahead of the entire podium at that point — but faded to 16th by the tape, finishing 4th in M1-29 in 1:54:24. Otis Jerwers, age 10, rounded out the top five in 1:57:39, and Caleb Lanni (16) slipped in just 23 seconds behind him at 1:58:02.

At the back, William and Spenser Nichols — both 16, both from Sacramento — completed the half marathon together in just over 3:47, finishing 10th and 11th with only three seconds between them.
