Men's 50K: Furman Takes the Lead and Never Lets Go

• Jean Pommier, 61, claims 4th in 3:43:18, slashing nearly 21 minutes off his 3:43:18… er, off his 2025 time of 4:04:17 — one of the biggest year-over-year improvements in the field.
• Piotr Kaszkur, last year's men's winner (3:36:03), finishes 7th this year in 4:00:53 — 24 minutes off his 2025 pace.

The fog hanging over Sacramento set the stage for a brisk, controlled race, and Blake Furman made his move count. Running at 6:30/mi, the 30-year-old from Johnstown, PA sat in 2nd through the early miles while Ian Sharman led the men's field. Then, on the Out & Back→Lap 1 segment — where Furman posted the fastest men's split — he surged past Sharman and never looked back, crossing in 3:21:41 to claim the win. Sharman, a 45-year-old from Bend, OR, ran a strong 6:39/mi to hold 2nd for the remainder of the race, finishing in 3:26:34 with the second-fastest men's split on that same decisive segment.

Sergey Vasyliev, 42, was remarkably consistent, holding 3rd from start to finish and clocking 3:41:00 at 7:07/mi. Behind him, Jean Pommier delivered one of the day's most compelling performances: the 61-year-old from Cupertino ran 3:43:18 — nearly 21 minutes faster than his 4:04:17 here in 2025 — and posted the third-fastest men's split on the Lap 1→Lap 2 segment to lock up 4th.

The year-over-year storylines didn't all run one direction. Karl Schnaitter (5th, 3:58:03), who finished 2nd here in 2025 in 3:37:47, crossed more than 20 minutes slower this time around. And defending champion Piotr Kaszkur, who won the men's race in 2025 in 3:36:03, finished 7th in 4:00:53 — a significant step back from the top of the podium. Victor Skorapa (6th, 3:59:17) also improved on his 2025 4th-place finish of 3:54:15, at least in terms of position, though his time ticked up slightly. Among the 38 men to finish, Jake Simkin at 19 years old turned in a notable effort with a 4:31:24, and Gary Wang, 58, improved on his 2025 10th-place finish (4:56:54) by finishing 15th in 5:15:56 — a different position but a faster time.
