F40-49: Curley Commands the 50K, O'Shea and Golledge Battle for the Podium

• Melissa Curley won the F40-49 age group in 4:18:47 (8:20/mi), holding 2nd among all women for most of the race before finishing 4th among women overall.
• Shana O'Shea took 2nd in F40-49 at 4:27:08 — just 8 minutes 21 seconds back — posting the 2nd-fastest women's split on the Lap 2→Lap 3 segment to cement her podium spot.
• Aiza Golledge (age 40, the youngest in the group) climbed steadily through the women's field, rising from 7th to 6th among women by the finish, with the 4th-fastest women's split on the Second Half.
• Elizabeth Omodt was the race's quiet mover in F40-49, advancing from 11th to 7th among women across the course — the most positions gained of anyone in the group.

Melissa Curley set the tone from the gun. The Truckee native ran 8:20 per mile across 31 miles of fog-draped Sacramento flatlands and sat 2nd among all women from the opening checkpoint all the way through five of seven splits. She also owned the 2nd-fastest women's split on the Out & Back→Lap 1 segment, making clear this was a controlled, deliberate performance rather than a lucky day. Only in the final stretches did she slip to 4th among women — a sign the overall women's podium was exceptionally competitive, not that Curley faded.

Shana O'Shea was the age group's second-best story. Steady at 5th among women through most of the race, she turned on the jets late, clocking the 2nd-fastest women's split on Lap 2→Lap 3 to finish 8:21 behind Curley. Behind her, Aiza Golledge — at 40, the youngest in the F40-49 field — quietly moved up all race long, converting a 7th-place women's position into 6th by the finish on the strength of a top-four women's split in the second half.

Elizabeth Omodt's race deserves a separate mention. Starting 11th among women, the San Jose 49-year-old picked off spots methodically, posting the 4th-fastest women's split on the Lap 4→Lap 5 (Marathon) stretch and finishing 7th among women — the biggest positional climb in the entire F40-49 group. Christina Vincent and Karen Xiao rounded out the six finishers, with Xiao completing the 50K in 5:51:37 — a genuine achievement in its own right on a cold, foggy January morning.
