Running 6:39 per mile through cool, foggy conditions, he held second among the men's field from the first checkpoint onward and never relinquished it, crossing in 3:26:34. Sergey Vasyliev (San Francisco) gave steady chase throughout, sitting third among the men at every single checkpoint en route to a 3:41:00 finish — consistent, controlled, and good enough for a clear runner-up result.

The subplot of the race belonged to Jean Pommier. The 61-year-old from Cupertino ran a measured early race, moving from 5th at the opening checkpoint to 4th by Lap 1 and holding there to the finish in 3:43:18. His Lap 1→Lap 2 split was the fastest of that segment among the top men — proof that his patience in the first half paid off in the second.

Further back, Piotr Kaszkur delivered the most dramatic progression of the day. Starting outside the top ten at the opening checkpoint, the Gold River runner worked his way through the field segment by segment, recording the 4th-fastest split on the Marathon-to-finish stretch to land 5th in 4:00:53. Tony Jankowski of Concord deserves his own mention at the other end of the leaderboard: at 73, he covered the full 50K in 6:25:41 — a finish that speaks for itself.
