Kalani Cullison, 47, from Davis, ran a race that was over almost before it began. She entered the Fire Station→Quarry segment with the 10th spot among women and quickly locked into 9th, where she stayed for the rest of the afternoon — never wavering, never yielding. Her 9:45/mi average over 31 miles of Sierra Nevada foothills is a statement, and her 5:02:45 finish left Melissa Curley's 5:34:08 runner-up effort a full 31 minutes and 23 seconds back. In a 38-woman age group, that margin is a rout.

Curley, 45, from Truckee, held second place comfortably, though her trajectory through the women's field told a slightly harder story — she slipped from 11th among women to 16th through the middle miles before steadying at 15th by the finish. Her 10:45/mi average was still good enough to keep Shannon Martin, 49, of Reno at arm's length. Martin was the race's most compelling mover: she was 27th among women at the first checkpoint and worked her way to 21st by the end, logging the 17th-fastest women's split on the ALT→Goat Hill segment along the way.

The back half of the top five told a similar story of patient forward progress. Kristi Schaad sat 32nd among women through the middle of the race before a strong HWY 49→Finish segment — 13th-fastest among women on that closing stretch — pulled her up to 24th at the line and 4th in the age group at 5:52:01. Nami Kato, 43, started 39th among women and finished 27th, crossing in 5:57:46 to round out the top five. On a clear, mild March day in Cool, the F40-49 field put together a wide range of stories — but Cullison's was the only one that was never really in doubt.
