San Francisco 10K: Kathy Johnson rules the F60-64 field

San Anselmo's Kathy Johnson didn't just win the F60-64 race — she put on a second-half clinic. After crossing the 5K mark somewhere in the middle of the women's field, Johnson turned on the jets, running the back half at a pace that ranked 73rd among all women on that segment. The result: a 54:16 finish at 8:44 per mile, good enough to win by 59 seconds — a commanding margin on a breezy San Francisco morning with 15 mph winds and 79% humidity doing nobody any favors.

Sacramento's Shuyaa Chen, 60, claimed 2nd in 55:15 (8:53/mi), holding her position steadily through the second half after a solid opening 5K. The real drama for 3rd place unfolded behind her. Joanne Babin, racing on home turf in San Francisco, ran a strong back half — the 155th-fastest women's split on the 5K→Finish leg — to climb 42 places among all women and cross in 58:18. Meanwhile, Gloria Jewell of Clovis ran the opposite trajectory, dropping 53 spots among women in the second half to finish 4th in 59:38. That's the difference between a strong finish and a fade — Babin's catch-up locked up the podium.

Kim Mroczkowski rounded out the top five in 1:01:02, while the field spread out steadily behind her: O Perez 6th in 1:02:48, Monica Gerhart 7th in 1:05:13, and Julie Pettway 8th in 1:07:03. A tight cluster then formed around the 1:08–1:09 mark — Karen Dilimetin (9th, 1:08:44), Wendy Oliver-Pyatt (10th, 1:08:49), and Jane Baldwin (11th, 1:08:53) separated by just nine seconds across three places. Johnson's 54:16, though, was never in doubt.
