M45-49: Zach Murphy runs away from a deep Bay Area field

• Albert Lee and Alexis Solomou both clocked 50:41 — same displayed time, different places (13th and 14th respectively), meaning Lee edged Solomou by the slimmest of margins.

Zach Murphy, 49, from Piedmont, was the class of the M45-49 field on a mild, overcast San Francisco morning. Running at 6:47 per mile through the city's iconic streets, he opened a gap that nobody in a 101-runner field could close — his winning margin of 51 seconds over Berkeley's Kris Rohman (42:59) was decisive, not lucky. Rohman, at 45, was clearly the second-best man on the day, running a composed 6:55/mi to hold off the rest of the field by a comfortable 3:33.

Oakland's Ballardo Wug Espinoza secured the final podium spot in 46:32 (7:29/mi), with Shawn McPeek (4th, 47:14) and Patrick Rice (5th, 47:29) completing a tight cluster just behind him — McPeek and Rice separated by only 15 seconds. Jed Needle (6th, 48:07) sat just outside that group, and then came the razor-thin duel between Robert Wilton of Harpenden (7th, 48:19) and San Francisco's Craig Smollin (8th, 48:20) — one second apart after more than 6 miles of racing.

The mid-pack produced its own intrigue. Juan Pimentel (9th, 49:44) and Demian Oksenendler (10th, 49:49) were locked in a five-second battle at the back of the top ten, while further back, Albert Lee and Alexis Solomou — both San Francisco locals — crossed in the same clock time of 50:41, with Lee's 13th-place finish edging Solomou's 14th by a whisker the stopwatch couldn't fully capture. The top 20 rounded out at Spencer Honey's 52:56, with 81 more finishers completing the M45-49 field behind him.
