Four women lined up on a cool, overcast San Francisco morning — 64°F, a light bay breeze, humidity hanging at 81% — and all four crossed the finish line. That alone is worth noting. But the real story at the front of the F75-79 field was a tight, determined battle between Carol McKinnon and Mercedes Acosta.

McKinnon, at 75 the youngest in the field, took the win in 1:30:45, averaging 14:36 per mile across the full 10K. Acosta, four years her senior at 79, pushed her every step of the way, finishing just 1 minute 40 seconds back in 1:32:25 at 14:52/mi. That's a narrow margin over 6.2 miles — and the fact that Acosta, the oldest competitor in the field, was the one applying the pressure makes it all the more striking.

Phyllis Sammon, also 79, claimed 3rd in 1:36:35, running 15:33/mi — a solid 4:10 behind Acosta, with San Francisco's famously rolling terrain doing its work by that stage of the race. Carol Turner, 78, finished 4th in 1:55:42 at 18:37/mi, completing the course and closing out a field in which every single entrant finished.

On a morning when the Golden Gate fog kept temperatures honest, these four athletes covered every inch of the course. McKinnon takes the win, but the whole F75-79 field earned its applause.
