M70+ 5K: O'Callaghan Owns the Morning

• Mike O'Callaghan, 70, wins in 26:36 (8:34/mi), finishing nearly a minute clear of runner-up Frederick Taylor's 27:27.
• Closest battle of the day: Sam Fernandez (5th, 34:18) and David Martula (6th, 34:27) — nine seconds apart, with Martula, 79, making that gap look even more impressive.
• Charles Wilson, 83, finishes all 16 at 50:22 — the oldest man on the start line, and he crossed it.
• 16 men, 70 and older, racing a 5K through 60°F Santa Rosa mist. Every finish time earned.

Mike O'Callaghan made the trip from Camp Verde, Arizona count. His 26:36 at an 8:34/mi clip was the sharpest performance in the M70+ field by a clear margin — Frederick Taylor of Austin gave chase and finished a solid 2nd in 27:27 (8:50/mi), but O'Callaghan was never truly threatened. Kevin Teuscher, a Santa Rosa local running on home roads, rounded out the podium in 30:00 (9:39/mi), a full 2:33 back of Taylor.

The race spread out considerably from there, with Garry Trojanowski (4th, 32:03) and Sam Fernandez (5th, 34:18) filling the next spots — but the most compelling battle of the afternoon played out between Fernandez and David Martula. Martula, 79 years old and traveling from Hadley, Massachusetts, crossed in 34:27 — just nine seconds behind Fernandez — to claim 6th. Jim Glick (7th, 35:04) wasn't far behind either, keeping that mid-pack cluster honest.

The back half of the field stretched across a wide range of paces, from Joseph Walsh's 37:04 (8th) through Stephen Izen's 40:45 (12th) and Steven Baker's 43:35 (14th). And then there was Charles Wilson — 83 years old, from Santa Rosa — finishing in 50:22 at 16:13/mi. In a field defined by men who refuse to stop competing, Wilson was the most vivid reminder of what that actually means.
