His 6:01/mi average was in a different stratosphere from the rest of the 46-man field, and his 18:41 finish left no doubt about who owned this race. The 47-second gap back to Dwayne Spencer, 58, of San Jose wasn't a close call — it was a statement.

Spencer, running 6:16/mi, was genuinely impressive in his own right: he was the only other finisher to crack 20 minutes, and he finished nearly four full minutes clear of the podium battle below.
