M45-49: Damen Dominates San Francisco in 2:41:43

John Damen made the M45-49 race his own from the gun. The 46-year-old from Moraga moved steadily through the men's field — climbing from 30th among men at the first checkpoint all the way to 18th by the finish — and never relinquished his lead among his peers. His 6:10/mi average over San Francisco's notoriously hilly 26.2 miles, in 15 mph winds and 77% humidity, was a cut above the rest of the field. His strongest visible moment came between miles 18 and 20, where he posted the 10th-fastest men's split on that segment in the entire men's field — a sign of a runner who was pressing when others were fading.

Adrian Ludwig, the 48-year-old San Francisco local, held 2nd place with a 2:56:19 (6:43/mi) — a solid effort in its own right, but never a threat to Damen's lead. Ludwig's best relative moment came early, between miles 8 and 9.6, where he posted the 47th-fastest men's split on that stretch. Hendrik Fuhrmann of Dresden rounded out the podium in 3:11:23 (7:18/mi), climbing steadily through the men's field in the back half to claim 3rd.

The race's most compelling battle played out for 5th and 6th. Kevin Galligan, 49, from Long Island City, ran a strong closing stretch — posting the 145th-fastest men's split from mile 24 to the finish — and crossed in 3:17:22. Right behind him, Baltimore's Peter Gregg finished in 3:17:32, just 10 seconds back after more than four hours of racing. William Ng (4th, 3:15:03) had carved his way up from far back in the men's field to split the two, making that 4th-through-6th cluster one of the more quietly dramatic stories of the day.
