Drew Nicholson came to San Francisco and made the M40-44 race his from start to finish. The 41-year-old from Surrey, BC steadily threaded his way through the men's field — 25th among men at the first checkpoint, 22nd, 18th, and ultimately 15th by the finish line — running 6:06/mi across the 26.2 miles in 59°F and a stiff 15 mph wind off the bay. His 2:39:58 was in a class of its own, a gap of over 13 minutes to the rest of M40-44. He also posted the 12th-fastest men's split on the 18M→20M segment, a stretch where many runners begin to feel the course's demands.

Behind him, the battle for 2nd and 3rd was genuinely compelling. Yun Zhou of Palo Alto ran a controlled race, sitting 48th among men at the midpoint and grinding his way to 42nd by the finish — good enough for 2:53:00 and the runner-up spot. But San Francisco local Daniel Abera was coming hard. Starting 92nd among men, Abera worked his way to 67th by the halfway mark, then 43rd at the line — posting the 31st-fastest men's split on the final 24M→Finish leg in the process. He crossed in 2:53:13, just 13 seconds behind Zhou. The finish time was nearly the same; the effort to get there was a catch-up story.

The 5th-place finish by David Welsh deserves its own mention. The runner from Daphne, AL began the race 141st among men and finished 67th — a swing of 74 places — to clock 2:58:32 (6:49/mi), including the 64th-fastest men's split on the 22M→24M segment. In a 435-runner M40-44 field, that kind of sustained forward momentum across the back half of a marathon is no accident.
