Rocket City 10K — M45-49: Varney Edges Cruz in a Razor-Thin Finish

• David Varney (46, Batavia OH) won M45-49 in 46:59 at a 7:34/mi clip — with Roger Cruz finishing in the same clock time but a fraction of a second behind.
• Roger Cruz (45, Euless TX) was second by the slimmest of margins — same displayed time of 46:59, but the timing system had Varney ahead.
• Jason Sebastian (47, Madison AL) claimed third in 51:49, nearly five minutes back of the top two.
• The gap from 1st to last spanned 43:20, with Tazh Brown (47, Madison AL) rounding out the 10-man field in 1:30:19.

In warm, breezy conditions — 70°F with 17 mph winds and humidity pushing 76% — ten men from across the country lined up in M45-49 at the Rocket City 10K. What emerged at the front was about as close as a finish gets without sharing a podium step. David Varney of Batavia, Ohio and Roger Cruz of Euless, Texas both crossed in 46:59 at a 7:34/mi average, but the timing system — measuring finer than the displayed second — placed Varney ahead. Cruz can take some consolation in running a near-identical race; there was virtually nothing between them on the day.

Jason Sebastian of Madison, Alabama stepped onto the podium in third with a solid 51:49 (8:20/mi), a clear gap back from the front two but well clear of the rest. Brian Mount (49, Eastaboga AL) was fourth in 53:51, with Jason Elmer (49, Bowling Green KY) fifth in 55:36 — those three positions separated by just under four minutes combined. Brady Wentlandt (49, Alexandria VA) finished sixth in 58:36, just inside the hour mark, while Jason Crader (46, Little Rock AR) and Chris Lantz (45, Park Hills KY) came home seventh and eighth in 1:02:51 and 1:04:57 respectively.

Brian Henley (48, Helena AL) rounded out the competitive cluster in ninth at 1:07:13, with Tazh Brown (47, Madison AL) completing the field in 1:30:19 — a 14:32/mi pace that suggests a tough afternoon in the humidity. The story of the day, though, belongs to the front: Varney and Cruz ran stride for stride through Huntsville and only the finest of margins separated them at the line.
