Fort Ord 25K: Neathery rules the F50-59 field

• Andrea Neathery won the F50-59 group in 3:05:24 (11:56/mi), finishing 3 minutes ahead of runner-up Jessica Wade.
• Jessica Wade ran the 18th-fastest Skyline→Toro Creek split among the women, but faded from 11th to 20th in the women's field over the final segment — Neathery, meanwhile, charged from 33rd to 19th among women across the race.
• Maria Mendez and Jessica Lightsey were separated by just 23 seconds at the finish (3:28:22 vs. 3:28:45) for 4th and 5th in the age group.
• The 12-woman F50-59 field spanned over 2 hours and 37 minutes from first to last finisher.

Andrea Neathery, 57, from Springfield, MO, was the class of the F50-59 field from start to finish — and then some. She entered the women's race sitting 33rd among all women, steadily reeled in competitors through the middle segment, and crossed the line 19th among women, clocking 11:56/mi across the 25K course. Her 14th-fastest women's split on the Toro Creek→Finish leg was the engine of that surge, and it put the result beyond doubt.

Jessica Wade, 50, looked like a contender after flying out to 11th among women early on. She posted the 18th-fastest Skyline→Toro Creek split in the women's field — a legitimately strong middle leg — but the final stretch told a different story. She slipped to 20th among women by the finish, crossing in 3:08:24, good enough for 2nd in the age group but 3 minutes back of Neathery. Melissa Langley, 52, of Marina, was remarkably consistent, holding 30th among women through both the middle and final checkpoints to claim 3rd in 3:19:53.

The battle for 4th was the race's tightest subplot. Maria Mendez and Jessica Lightsey ran nearly identical final efforts — Mendez's 35th-fastest Skyline→Toro Creek split mirrored Lightsey's exactly — and they arrived within 23 seconds of each other after more than three and a half hours of racing. Mendez edged it, 3:28:22 to 3:28:45. Behind them, the field spread out considerably, with Carrie Tilney completing the course in 5:42:59 to close out a 12-woman afternoon on the Fort Ord trails.
