California International Marathon M50-54: Ryf Runs Away With It at 2:33:55

• Jason Ryf won the M50-54 age group in 2:33:55 (5:52/mi), finishing nearly 70 seconds clear of runner-up Tom Clarke.
• The top three — Ryf, Clarke (2:35:03), and David Mastro (2:35:21) — were separated by just 86 seconds, with Clarke and Mastro separated by only 18 seconds at the line.
• A traffic jam at 15th–16th: Yingwei Liu (2:50:26), Darryl Lewis (2:50:27), and Joseph Chan (2:50:28) finished within two seconds of each other across three places.
• 537 men finished in the M50-54 age group, making this one of the deepest fields on the course.

Jason Ryf of Oshkosh, WI, turned in a commanding performance at 50 years old, running 5:52 per mile from start to finish and steadily climbing through the men's field as the race wore on. He entered the second half around 150th among all men and kept pushing, posting a strong back half to lock up the age-group title. His margin of victory — 1:08 over Tom Clarke — was decisive in a field this competitive.

Clarke (2:35:03, 5:55/mi) made his own move through the men's field, advancing from well outside the top 200 at the early checkpoints to finish 159th among the men. David Mastro of Roseville, CA ran a similarly progressive race at 2:35:21 (5:56/mi), and with just 18 seconds separating them at the tape, the battle for second and third was tight throughout the second half. Fourth-place Jason Tavakolian (2:36:32, 5:58/mi) was the one man in the top five who didn't run a notably progressive race — he held relatively steady position through 30K before making his push — and finished 1:11 behind Mastro.

Jorge Parra rounded out the top five in 2:38:59 (6:04/mi), crossing more than two minutes behind Tavakolian. Behind him, the M50-54 field settled into a fascinating cluster from 11th through 16th place, where six runners spanning Daniel Kono (2:50:03) through Qiang Zhou (2:50:32) finished within 29 seconds of each other. The three-way squeeze of Liu, Lewis, and Chan — 2:50:26, 2:50:27, and 2:50:28 — was the tightest finish of the day in this age group, three men who ran 26.2 miles only to be separated by a heartbeat.
