Elite Women's 23K: Florea storms late as two-time champ Njeru falls by a quarter-second

• Lauren Gregory (2:03:56) sat 5th at every checkpoint, then unleashed the fastest women's High Camp→FINISH split to leap all the way to 2nd — two spots better than her 4th here in 2025
• 0.24 seconds decided 3rd: Joyce Muthoni Njeru (2:03:59.03) held off Tabor Hemming (2:03:59.27) after leading mid-race
• Anna Gibson, fresh off winning the Ascent's USATF Championship, doubled back for 6th in 2:05:33

At roughly 7,500 feet of thin Tahoe air, the elite women's 23K turned into a six-checkpoint chess match. Njeru — the winner here in both 2024 (2:11:52) and 2025 (2:01:16), and 2nd among the women in this weekend's Ascent — grabbed the lead early with the fastest women's split on Olympic Valley East→Snow King and held it for the middle of the race. But Florea was stalking, moving 4th→3rd→2nd before dropping the field's fastest women's split on Snow King→KT 22 to take control. The 33-year-old from Sighișoara never gave it back, closing in 2:02:18 at 8:33/mi.

Behind her, the finish-line drama was extraordinary. Gregory, invisible in 5th all day, ran the fastest women's closing split from High Camp to snatch 2nd in 2:03:56. Three seconds later came the closest margin on the podium: Njeru, fading from the lead, edged Hemming by 0.24 seconds for 3rd. Hemming had ripped the fastest women's Siberia→High Camp split to climb back to 3rd late, and — like Njeru — was pulling double duty after taking 3rd among the women in the Ascent. Nienke Brinkman (2:04:45), 2nd-fastest on that same Siberia climb, completed the top five.

The Ascent doubles ran deep: Gibson's 6th, Nélie Clément's 8th here (2:10:34) after 5th in the Ascent, and Jade Belzberg — 2nd here in 2024 — taking 12th in 2:16:04 after 7th up the mountain. And 13th place carried its own photo-worthy gap: Arianna Dentis (2:16:29.27) held off Boulder's Rena Schwartz (2:16:29.91) by 0.64 seconds in a field of 50 elite women.
