Boston Marathon M18-39: Korir Seizes Command in the Back Half

John Korir did not lead early. Sitting 7th among men at the 10K checkpoint, he was a patient presence while others set the early tempo. It was the stretch from 20K to the half marathon where Korir made his defining move — posting the fastest men's split across that segment — and by the time the field reached the halfway point, he had vaulted to 2nd. From there he never looked back, holding the lead wire-to-wire through the back half and crossing in 2:01:52 at a relentless 4:39 per mile.

Alphonce Felix Simbu was the fastest man on the road between 10K and 15K, and that burst helped him climb from 15th at the 10K mark all the way to 3rd by halfway. He ultimately settled into 2nd at 2:02:47, with Benson Kipruto — who owned the 2nd-fastest men's split from miles 20 to 21 — breathing down his neck. Kipruto crossed just three seconds later in 2:02:50, making the race for silver and bronze as competitive as any stretch of the day.

The subplot of the race belonged to Hailemaryam Kiros. Starting conservatively — 25th among men through 5K — Kiros ran the fastest men's split from 5K to 10K and kept climbing. By the finish he had picked off 21 positions to land 4th in 2:03:42. Zouhair Talbi, who posted the 2nd-fastest split over that same early stretch, followed in 5th at 2:03:45, rounding out a podium chase that featured some of the sharpest mid-race acceleration in the field.
