The race's most dramatic positional story belonged to John Mahoney of Almont, CO. Starting deep in the men's field — 154th at the first checkpoint — Mahoney ran one of the most aggressive progressions of the day, surging into the top 10 by mid-race and never truly surrendering that ground.
