M30-34 at BMW Berlin Marathon: Sawe Delivers a 2:02 Masterclass

• Sabastian Sawe won the M30-34 age group in 2:02:16 (4:40/mi), posting the fastest 5K→10K split in the men's field and leading from wire to wire.
• Akira Akasaki charged from 8th at halfway to finish 2nd in 2:06:15, powered by the 2nd-fastest second-half split among the men.
• Chimdessa Debele held 2nd through most of the race before Akasaki's late surge dropped him to 3rd in 2:06:57 — still just 41 seconds back.
• Eight finishers in the M30-34 age group broke 2:11, across a field of 8,788.

Sabastian Sawe made this look controlled from the first kilometer. He sat at the front of the men's race at every checkpoint, never relinquishing his lead, and his 4:40-per-mile average tells you exactly how relentless that effort was. His fastest split came between 5K and 10K, suggesting he pushed the pace early and dared the field to respond. At 71°F and 85% humidity, conditions were hardly ideal for sub-2:03 marathoning, which makes the 2:02:16 all the more striking.

Behind him, Chimdessa Debele looked like the clear silver medalist for most of the afternoon. He ran in 2nd from the opening miles through 35K, steady and composed. But Akira Akasaki had other plans. Starting the second half in 8th place, Akasaki ran the 2nd-fastest back-half split in the men's field and reeled in Debele over the final kilometers, crossing in 2:06:15 to claim 2nd. Debele held on for 3rd in 2:06:57 — a 41-second gap that felt much smaller given how long he'd led the chase.

Yuhei Urano and Shin Kimura rounded out a strong top five with similarly aggressive second halves — Urano posted the 5th-fastest second-half split in the men's field, and Kimura the 5th-fastest 30K–35K segment. Kimura's move was particularly dramatic: he ran the first half in 20th place before climbing to 7th by the finish. Hendrik Pfeiffer (6th, 2:09:14) and Joseph Tiophil Panga (7th, 2:09:35) completed a top seven that was separated by just over seven minutes — a testament to the depth packed into this age group on a fast Berlin course.
