Masters Women at the B.A.A. 10K: Kiplagat Dominates in the Heat

• Karolyn Bowley, 52, claims 2nd in 37:36, closing with the 18th-fastest women's split on the final 8K-to-finish stretch to secure the runner-up spot.
• Rebecca Trachsel moves up four spots in the women's field over the final 5K, finishing 3rd in 38:49 with the 25th-fastest women's split on the 5K–8K segment.
• Heather Knight Pech, 60, finishes 5th in 41:02 — the 40th-fastest women's split on the closing stretch helping her advance six places in the women's field over the final kilometers.

Edna Kiplagat put on a masterclass across 77-degree Boston streets, running 32:09 at a 5:10-per-mile clip to win the Masters Women race by a margin that was never in doubt. She held 3rd in the women's field from the opening checkpoint all the way through the finish — a position she never surrendered — and backed it up with the 2nd-fastest women's split on the 5K-to-8K segment. In a field of 1,030 masters women, her gap to 2nd place was more than five and a half minutes. That's not a race; that's a statement.

Behind her, Karolyn Bowley of Middletown, RI ran a composed 37:36 to take 2nd, holding steady at 20th in the women's field throughout and finishing strong on the back half. Rebecca Trachsel of Winchester, MA was the most visibly progressive runner in the top five — she advanced from 29th to 25th in the women's field across the final segments, arriving 3rd in 38:49. Amanda Watters of Ashland, MA rounded out the top four in 40:20, moving from 38th to 36th in the women's field on the strength of the 36th-fastest women's split on the 5K–8K leg.

The battle at the back of the top ten was tight and unforgiving in the summer heat. Yordanka Shtiliyanova of Concord, MA and Kim Martineau of Somerville, MA both crossed in 42:12 — identical times, with Shtiliyanova edged into 8th and Martineau 9th by the finest of margins. Heather Knight Pech of Darien, CT deserves a special mention: at 60, she ran 41:02 for 5th place, climbing six spots in the women's field on the closing stretch to finish ahead of competitors nearly two decades her junior.
