M60-69: Drew Coughlin Wins the 50-Miler on Home Turf

• Coughlin takes it in 9:55:26 (11:55/mi), the only M60-69 finisher to break 10 hours on a warm April day in Auburn.
• Bill Carlson's closing surge — the 11th-fastest Last Gasp→Finish split among all men — helped him lock up 2nd in 10:14:49, nearly 20 minutes clear of 3rd.
• Bill Nitzberg ran a strong final push as well, posting the 22nd-fastest Last Gasp→Finish split among the men to finish 3rd in 10:53:31.
• Tight battle for 5th: Alan George (12:40:35) and Hoang-Nam Nguyen (12:41:45) were separated by just 70 seconds across 50 miles.

Drew Coughlin, racing on his home turf in Auburn, turned in the standout performance of the M60-69 group. His 9:55:26 at an 11:55/mi clip was a full 19 minutes ahead of the next man, and he was moving well enough in the back half to record the 15th-fastest Rattlesnake Bar→Last Gasp split among all men — a stretch where the 73°F heat and clear skies made the going increasingly tough. His overall men's place climbed from 24th early to as high as 19th by the finish, a sign he was running people down late.

Bill Carlson had a very different race shape. Starting conservatively — he was 62nd among men at the first checkpoint — he spent the entire day reeling in competitors, ultimately finishing 26th among men. His Last Gasp→Finish split was the 11th-fastest among all men in the field, a blistering close that secured 2nd in the M60-69 group in 10:14:49. Bill Nitzberg mirrored that patient approach, climbing steadily from 55th to 33rd among men and also finishing strongly on the final segment to claim 3rd in 10:53:31.

Behind the podium, Manouch Shirvanioun held 4th in 12:13:44, while the race's tightest battle played out between Alan George and Hoang-Nam Nguyen. George, 60, from Buckeye, AZ, crossed in 12:40:35; Nguyen, also 60, out of San Jose, finished just 70 seconds later at 12:41:45 — a slim margin after more than 12 hours of racing. Keith Blom, at 69 the oldest finisher in the group, came home 8th in 13:12:00, with Terry Toy and Harold Vollkommer rounding out all ten finishers.
