Perfect conditions greeted the M50-59 group on a clear April morning in Auburn — 61°F, nearly calm, and dry — and Mark Eger made the most of every mile. The 53-year-old from Roseville ran 9:02 per mile across all ten miles, a pace that put a commanding gap between himself and the rest of the age group almost immediately. His margin of victory — 18 minutes and 5 seconds over Klein — was decisive enough that the race for first was effectively over long before the finish line.

Gary Klein, the 59-year-old from Folsom, was equally unthreatened in 2nd, running 10:50/mi to clock 1:48:24 and become the oldest finisher on the M50-59 podium. He crossed nearly ten minutes ahead of 3rd place, making the top two spots the most clearly resolved of the day.

The real drama lived in the battle for 3rd. Daniel Ogburn (San Carlos) and Daniel Jones (Sacramento) ran nearly identical races — 11:51/mi and 11:54/mi respectively — and arrived within 24 seconds of each other.
