Masters Men 10K: Andersen edges a tight pack in Bismarck

• Gerry Andersen, 64, wins in 8:44:05 (84:21/mi avg), holding off Justin Cvancara by just 39 seconds.
• Top three separated by 94 seconds — Yevgen Lyubchenko, 45, rounded out the podium at 8:45:39.
• Places 7–10 decided in 27 seconds — Roger Dalin (8:54:31), Travis Jochim (8:54:43), Joon Lee (8:54:58), and Sean Forschen (8:54:58) all finished within a half-minute of each other.
• Orville Drosdal, 69, of New Town, ND, finished 12th at 8:57:15 — one of the more remarkable efforts in a competitive Masters Men field.

Cool and humid conditions — 58°F with 92% humidity and a light breeze off the plains — greeted 20 Masters Men on the streets of Bismarck. Gerry Andersen, 64, from Lancaster, CA, made the long trip count, crossing in 8:44:05 at an 84:21/mi average to claim the win. Justin Cvancara of Saint Cloud, MN, pushed him the whole way, finishing 39 seconds back at 8:44:44. That margin sounds comfortable until you consider that Yevgen Lyubchenko — a local Bismarck runner, 45 years old — was another 55 seconds behind at 8:45:39, keeping the pressure on all the way to the line.

Matt Mueller (8:47:59, 4th) and Juergen Bold (8:51:39, 5th) kept the chase pack honest, with Nick Reynolds completing the top six just 14 seconds behind Bold at 8:51:53. Then came one of the tightest clusters of the morning: Dalin, Jochim, Lee, and Forschen all crossed between 8:54:31 and 8:54:58 — 27 seconds covering four finishers — before Chad Burchinal added a fifth name to that knot at 8:55:37.

The standout subplot belonged to Orville Drosdal, 69, of New Town, ND, who finished 12th at 8:57:15. At an age when most runners have long since stepped back, Drosdal was competing in the thick of a field that skewed heavily toward athletes in their 40s. Eric Winegart, 65, of Florence, MT, closed out the 20-man field at 9:44:57 — the only finisher to break the 94:00/mi barrier, but a finisher nonetheless on a damp September morning in North Dakota.
